Hereafter tells three parallel stories about three people affected by death and the afterlife. George (Matt Damon) used to be a psychic who could communicate with the dead; Marie (Cécile de France) is a journalist who survived the tsunami and Marcus, who lost his elder twin brother, Jason, in a car accident.
The initial reaction I had when I saw the trailer came from The Mentalist, because Patrick Jane always asserts that “There’s no such thing as psychics.” Standing on the side of the film, I would think they applies to those bogus psychics Marcus visits in order to speak to his dead brother. (Some are obviously fakes but I guess when you’re desperate, anything goes.) So, I would say it’s very heartwarming and touching when Marcus finally “speaks” to Jason through George. I would say it has a nice ending, especially for George, because he literally avoids contact with anybody (including handshakes) because a single touch can trigger his gift/curse. You also identify with Marie, because she’s in search for some understanding of her near-death experience when no one else would bother, and even question her sanity. It makes you wonder what’s there after death. 3 and a half out of 5 stars.
